Is Santa Claus Real? The Truth About Santa Claus
Yes, dear reader, there is a Santa Claus.
Now you're probably waiting for the trite follow up. Maybe it goes something like this:
Santa Claus is the spirit of Christmas. He's a feeling rather than a person.
Some might even say that he is a place (such as home) or that "Santa lives in the hearts of those who believe."
If you're waiting for me to say something like that, you're going to be disappointed. Sorely so.
I discovered on the Christmas Eve of 2017 that there is, indeed, a Santa Claus.
As the dust settled from our family gathering and the grownups made our way into the living room to chat with a cup of coffee, we all shared a similar story. So similar, in fact, that when we tell this story it sends shivers up the spines of those listening.
Each of us remarked that we had, as children, never heard a peep outside of our bedrooms on Christmas Eve. Some of us slept all night; Others struggled to sleep at all (that would be me!). The common thread, however, was that not a one of us heard a body in the house putting the gifts under the tree. In fact, my mother's family tradition was for Santa to put the Christmas tree up every year on Christmas Eve. The racket never woke her.
A childlike faith in Santa Claus requires -- nay mandates! -- that a child not discover a plainclothes individual putting gifts beneath (or on) the Christmas tree. Yet many children around the world celebrate this holiday and maintain their intense, faith-filled believe in a jolly fat man who delivers gifts to all the good boys and girls around the globe.
That faith may be destroyed by many factors, but time and again I hear stories of adults who lost their faith in Santa only after they became old enough that their faith in magic itself had diminished. Of those who lost their faith young, many did so because their peers had bullied them, or an older relative had revealed their own version of the truth.
But how many of us awoke on that hopeful night to discover someone else putting presents under the tree?
None who I've spoken with so far. Not one.
Only one conclusion can, therefore, be drawn: Santa Claus exists. He may not be the one placing the gifts beneath the tree, but he is the one who ensures that the children of the world can continue to believe in magic. He ensures that a child sleeps through the night on Christmas Eve, or that they don't hear the racket and find themselves face-to-face with a plainclothes Santa delivering the gifts beneath the tree.
Oh yes. Yes, there is a Santa Claus. In 2018, I believe.
